A project is a related amount of work, usually consisting of a number of units of real estate. The project is the anchor of Invantive Estate: budgets, contracts, orders, revenues, invoice lines, processes, hours and documents all belong to a project, and security follows the project. See [[Invantive Estate/Concepts/Security|Security]].
The subject "Projects" holds the project itself. Next to it, the "Projects Workbench" shows one project with its figures per cost category, so that a project developer can open the underlying budgets, contracts, orders and invoice lines from one place.
## Identification
A project has a unique code, a name and an optional short code. The short code exists for ERP systems that limit the length of a project code, for example to eight characters. The code is usually assigned when the first exposé is approved. The exposé is the approved budget.
## Project Types
A project is one of three types:
- An individual project holds financial data and can be reported on its own.
- A sub project holds financial data and can be reported on its own. It can also be consolidated into a master project.
- A master project holds no financial data of its own. It consolidates the figures of its sub projects.
A sub project names its master project and has a cost category postfix. The postfix is unique within the master project. In consolidated reports it keeps the cost categories of the sub projects apart. Whether reports consolidate sub projects is a personal preference of the user.
To turn an individual project into a master project, give the existing project another code, create a new master project, change the old project into a sub project and select the new master project on it.
## People and Organisations
A project names the people who are responsible for it. The roles are project developer, product group director, administrator, controller, plan developer, salesman and the person who signs the timesheets. The customer, the project entity (the legal structure in which the project is realised) and a partner in a cooperation are organisations. See [[Invantive Estate/Concepts/Organisations and Persons|Organisations and Persons]].
## Classification
A project belongs to a product group, which groups projects by theme such as shops, houses, offices and area development. It has a phase that shows its progress, such as planning, acquisition, development, realisation and wrapping up. A project can also carry a land status, free fields, a reporting group and classifications.
The product group, phase and land status are reference data. See [[Invantive Estate/Reference Data|Reference Data]].
## Dates and Size
A project has the dates of its life, from the exposé and the purchase of the land to the planned and actual start of sales, construction and delivery. It also holds the planned size in square metres of land, offices, shops and other space, and the number of houses and parking places.
## Closing
A closed project cannot be changed, and neither can the data under it, such as orders, budgets and revenues. The only action left is to reopen the project. According to the manual the user `system` is the only one who can still change the data of a closed project.
## Copying and Deleting
A project can be copied in full or in part: the new project can take over the budgets, revenues, orders, latest estimates, contract budgets, budget movements, processes, authorisations, involvements, allocations, versions and classifications. A project can also be deleted in full or in part, in which case the same parts are selected one by one. Deleting is a function for the application manager.
## Project Status
Next to the data of the project itself, a project has a status: a short summary of its condition and a textual explanation. A status indicator places the project in one of six classes of progress and budget control. The date of the last review and the date of the next review are kept with it.
