A part of a result is selected in the grid and copied to the clipboard in a form which a spreadsheet accepts. The examples use the result of the statement described in [[Invantive Query Tool Multi-Platform/Results|Results]]. The selection and the copy are available from release 28.0.
## Selecting
A click on a cell selects the cell. The selection is widened as in other programs:
- Shift and a click on another cell select the rectangle between the two cells.
- Ctrl and a click add a cell to the selection, or take it out again.
- A click on a row number selects the whole row, and Ctrl or Shift widen the selection with other rows.
- Ctrl+A selects every row of the result. On a result of 100,000 rows the selection is made in less than a second.
Cells and rows do not mix: selecting a row replaces a selection of cells, and selecting a cell replaces a selection of rows.
## Copying
Ctrl+C copies the selection, and so does Ctrl+Insert. On MacOS the Command key takes the place of Ctrl. Ctrl+Shift+C copies the selection with the captions of the columns on a first line.
What is copied is the text of the cells as the grid shows them, in the order of the grid:
- A tab stands between two cells and a line break between two rows, so the rows land in separate cells of a spreadsheet. The line break is the one of the operating system, and there is none after the last row.
- A value is not put between quotes.
- Rows and columns come in the order in which the grid shows them, also after a column was moved or the rows were sorted or filtered.
- Of a rectangle, the cells which are not selected are copied as empty values, and a row with no selected cell is left out.
- A yes or no value is copied as `True` or `False`.
In the examples `<TAB>` stands for a tab character. The selection of the cells of the rows `2` to `4` in the columns `id`, `CATEGORY` and `AMOUNT` gives three lines, in which the last amount is empty because every fourth amount is:
```text
2<TAB>Gamma<TAB>2,50
3<TAB>Alpha<TAB>3,75
4<TAB>beta<TAB>
```
With Ctrl+Shift+C the same selection starts with a line of captions:
```text
id<TAB>CATEGORY<TAB>AMOUNT
2<TAB>Gamma<TAB>2,50
3<TAB>Alpha<TAB>3,75
4<TAB>beta<TAB>
```
A click on the row number `3` selects the whole row, and Ctrl+C then gives all five columns of that row, with the yes or no value as `True`:
```text
3<TAB>Alpha<TAB>3,75<TAB>04/10/2026 00:00:00<TAB>True
```
## The Cell Menu
The button "Cell Menu" on the toolbar of the results opens a menu which acts on the selection. The same menu opens with the secondary mouse button on a cell and with the Menu key. A secondary click on a cell which is not selected selects the cell first. The entries are:
- "Copy" and "Copy with Headers" do what Ctrl+C and Ctrl+Shift+C do.
- "Copy as List" puts the values of the selected cells on one line, separated by a comma and a space.
- "Copy as Sorted List" does the same in the order of the text in the language of the device, so `10` stands before `9`.
- "Copy as Sorted and Unique List" removes the doubles after sorting.
- "Copy column name of selected cell to clipboard" copies the caption of the column.
- "Save selected cell contents as file" writes the value of the selected cell to a file, as it is. A text is written as UTF-8 without a byte order mark, and a document or an image is written byte for byte. A number or an empty value is refused with a message.
- "Hide selected column" hides the column of the selected cell; the field chooser brings it back.
The list entries copy the value itself and not what the grid shows: a number keeps its digits and has no thousands separator, and an empty value reads `null`.
The selection of the `CATEGORY` cells of the first six rows gives the following results:
```text
beta, Gamma, Alpha, beta, Gamma, Alpha
```
for "Copy as List", then
```text
Alpha, Alpha, beta, beta, Gamma, Gamma
```
for "Copy as Sorted List" and
```text
Alpha, beta, Gamma
```
for "Copy as Sorted and Unique List". "Copy column name of selected cell to clipboard" gives `CATEGORY`.
## The Field Chooser
The button "Field Chooser" opens a list with one check box per column and a button "Show All". A check box hides or shows its column, and "Show All" brings back every column. The list is made when it opens, so it holds the columns of the result which is shown.
