The "Trace" pane lists the trace messages which Invantive Query Tool Multi-Platform writes while it works: what the engine does for a statement, how long a call took, what went wrong and was handled. It is meant for the diagnosis of a statement which behaves unexpectedly and for support. There is one list for the whole window, since the trace belongs to the application and not to a query tab. ![[20261007-qtm-trace.png]] ## Switching It On The button "Trace" at the left of the toolbar collects the messages: a green dot while it does, and a red circle while it does not. The pane starts with collecting off. The list begins at the moment of switching on; what was written before is not in it. Switching off keeps what was collected. Collecting does not change what the application writes to a trace file. Whether it also writes one is decided by the environment it was started in; see [[Environment Variables]]. The pane only shows the messages, in this window. ## The List Each message is a line with: - "Time (UTC)": the moment it was written, to the millisecond. - "Level": how serious it is, from Debug to Error. - "Message Code": the code of the message, for instance `itgentut024`. The code leads to the topics about it on the product forums. - "Message": the text. - "Duration (ms)" and "Quantity": how long it took and how much it moved, when the message says. - "Provider", "Table" and "Thread": where it was written. The list holds at most 100,000 messages; the oldest are let go beyond that. When the application writes faster than the list can take them in, the messages in between are left out and a line says how many. ## Searching The field "Find" keeps the messages whose text, message code, provider or table holds the text of the field, irrespective of upper and lower case. ## Clearing and Exporting "Clear" empties the list. "Export" writes the messages which are shown to a file with comma separated values, in UTF-8: the time as `2026-10-07T08:53:42.052Z`, and the other fields as text between double quotes.
