Every message the product raises carries a code of eleven characters, such as `itgenqtl181`, `itgengpr015` or `itgenora810`. It is the most useful thing on the screen when something goes wrong, and it is worth reading rather than skipping.
## What the Code Says
The code names the component which raised the message, not the product which showed it. `itgenqtl` is the Query Tool itself, `itgenora` the Oracle driver, `itgengpr` the generic provider layer, `itgencmr` the connection manager, `itgenlss` the session I/O bookkeeping. A message code therefore says at once whether a failure came from the user interface, from the engine or from a driver.
The code stays the same in every language, which the text does not. That is why a question quotes the code: this documentation and the [forums](https://forums.invantive.com) are indexed by it, and a Dutch text pasted into an English search finds nothing.
## Where the Codes Are
- Below the icon of every message window, for an information message as well as for an error. The code can be selected and copied there.
- In the "Message Code" column of the [[Invantive Query Tool/Trace|Trace]] panel, for every message of a run rather than only the one which failed.
- In the "Message Code" column of the [[Invantive Query Tool/Connection Monitor|Connection Monitor]], for a call which failed.
- In the trace file, where the run was traced.
- In the member `messageCode` of the document which "Copy as JSON" and "Save as JSON" make in the message window; see [[Invantive Query Tool/Error as JSON|Error as JSON]].
## Reading One
The text of a message names what was being done and, where the product knows one, what to do about it. Where the message came from a platform, the platform's own error is carried in it: the code of the product says which of our components was involved, and the text of the platform says what the platform refused. Both belong in a question, together with the statement and the release.
The identifications the platform gave the request - the "Remote Correlation IDs" of the trace - are what that platform's own support desk asks for, and they are worth copying before the window is closed.
