A platform which holds many companies, administrations or environments behind one log on presents them to Invantive UniversalSQL as [[Invantive UniversalSQL/General/Partitioning|partitions]]. Which of them a statement runs against is chosen in the "Connection" group of the ribbon, on the split button beside the name of the database. The button names the partitions of the platform connected to, so its label reads differently per driver.
## Choosing Them
The menu lists the partitions the connection found, each with a tick. Ticking several of them makes a statement run against each in turn and puts the answers under one another, with a column stating which partition a row came from. Ticking none is not a choice: at least one partition is always selected.
The selection holds for every statement executed afterwards, in every document, until it is changed. It is part of the connection rather than of the document.
## In the Statement
A statement can name the partitions itself instead of relying on the selection, which is what a script wants: a script which depends on what somebody ticked yesterday is a script which cannot be repeated. See [[Invantive UniversalSQL/General/Partitioning|Partitioning]] for the `partition` clause and for the columns which state the partition of a row.
The Dummy driver of the sample database has four partitions, one selected at a time, so its menu lists them below the entry which chooses the default partition again. A driver such as Exact Online has one per division, and a statement over fifty divisions is fifty times the traffic - which is what the [[Invantive Query Tool/Connection Monitor|Connection Monitor]] shows when it groups the calls of one statement.
