A connection to the database is not yet a session of an application. A user, a screen or a script first logs on to the business layer. Until then every business object shows no rows, because the business objects filter on facts that only the log-on sets.
The log-on records:
- the user and their roles,
- the [[Invantive Studio/Repository/Concepts/Partition|partition]],
- the language, used for every translated text and message,
- the module and the action, which tell which screen or program makes the change and which license is needed,
- the [[Invantive Studio/Repository/Concepts/Point in Time|moment]] for the point-in-time views.
The products of Invantive log on automatically after the user has entered a log-on code and password. A script logs on with the session procedure of the application, such as `bubs_session.set_session_info`, before it reads or changes data.
The log-on also enables the database role through which the business layer may be used, so that a connection which has not logged on to the application cannot reach the business objects at all.
