A statement that does not follow the grammar of Invantive UniversalSQL is refused with a syntax error before it runs. Each kind of syntax error has its own message code, and each kind has a code of its own per part of the statement, such as the where clause or an if statement in PSQL. Available from release 28.0; earlier releases report every syntax error as `itgensql056`. ## Reading a Syntax Error A syntax error reports: - what is wrong, such as `The statement ends after 'where' while more text is expected.`; - the part of the statement, such as `The error is in the where clause.`, when it is known; - the procedure or function, when the error is inside one; - the line and the column, both counted from 1, with a tab as one column; - an excerpt of the line of the error and the two lines before it, with carets under the error; - a hint, such as the items that are valid at the position, when there are five or fewer of them. For example: ```text itgensyn003: A ';' is missing after 'Employees'. The error is on line 2, column 25. 1 | select * 2 | from Payroll.Employees | ^ Add ';' after 'Employees'. ``` The excerpt lines up in a fixed-width font. Keywords and punctuation in a message are shown as they are typed and are not translated. An item such as `a data type, such as NUMBER, VARCHAR2 or DATE` stands for a group, and its examples are valid at the position. The error document of an error window ("Copy as JSON") holds the same facts for a program or an AI agent: `url` with the address of the section of the code below, `position` with `line`, `column`, `offset` and `length`, and `syntax` with the `kind`, the `expected` items as an array and the `context`. The tool `check_sql` of [[Invantive MCP Server/Invantive MCP Server|Invantive MCP Server]] checks statements without running them and answers the same facts. In a script of Invantive Data Hub or Query Tool, [[Invantive Script/Statements/Check SQL|local check sql]] does the same and fails with the error itself. ## Kinds of Syntax Error | Kind | Codes | Meaning | What to do | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Unexpected text | `itgensyn001`, `itgensyn100` to `itgensyn149` | The text at the position is not valid there. | Replace or remove the text at the caret, or type one of the items the message lists. | | Text that cannot be recognised | `itgensyn002`, `itgensyn150` to `itgensyn199` | The text up to the position matches no statement. | Look for a missing or misspelled keyword between the quoted words. | | Missing text | `itgensyn003`, `itgensyn200` to `itgensyn249` | A keyword or punctuation is missing. | Add the quoted text after the quoted previous word. | | Superfluous text | `itgensyn004`, `itgensyn250` to `itgensyn299` | The same punctuation stands twice. | Remove the quoted text. | | Invalid character | `itgensyn005` | A character that no part of a statement accepts, named with its Unicode code point such as `U+00A0`. | Remove the character, or put it inside a text between single quotes. | | Premature end | `itgensyn006`, `itgensyn300` to `itgensyn349` | The statement ends while more text is expected. | Complete the statement after its last word. | An invisible character, such as a non-breaking space copied from a web page or a byte order mark, shows up as an invalid character with its code point. A missing `;` between two statements is reported after the first statement, where the `;` belongs, and not at the start of the next one. ## Message Codes Each code below names its kind and the part of the statement. The action of its kind applies until a code gets a more specific action. ## itgensyn001 Unexpected text outside a part of the statement with a code of its own, such as between two statements. Replace or remove the text at the caret. When the message lists what is valid at the position, type one of those items. ## itgensyn002 Text that cannot be recognised outside a part of the statement with a code of its own, such as between two statements. Check the text between the two quoted words for a missing or misspelled keyword.
